Frequently Asked Questions
Here is a list of Frequently Asked Questions (and answers!) about the popular YD Recent Posts with Thumbnails Widget Plugin. If you encounter an issue or have a configuration question about this WordPress extension, please go through this list first to see if the answer to your problem is already featured here.
Please also check the usage guide / installation / operating instructions page.
If you do not find an appropriate solution, please use the comments on the official plugin support page to report or get free community support. No free support will be performed by private e-mail. Please do not use the forum posts on WordPress.org: the plugin author has no time to check this forum on a regular basis.
Questions
Where/how should I ask questions?
After checking this FAQ, please go to the official plugin community support page and use comments.
I will answer only on that page so that all users can benefit from the answer. So please come back to see the answer or subscribe to that page’s post comments.
What language can I use to ask the questions?
Please only use the English or French language. Do not bother translating to French, I am fluent in both languages.
What is is the plugin author’s e-mail address?
It is mentioned in the comments at the top of the main plugin file. However, please prefer comments on the plugin page (as indicated above) for all non-private matters.
I made some changes but they do not show up on the site…
Remember to use the “Clear cache” button of the YD Recent Posts settings page of the admin menu if you want changes to appear right away on your blog. Otherwise you will have to wait until content is added to the blog for the cache to expire (ie. when you write a new post or page – new comments don’t make the cache expire).
How to display this in the template without using a widget?
Insert this code into your template:
<?php display_yd_recent_posts_here() ?>
If I don’t want to use the widget, how can I display it in php?
Same answer as above.
Can I include the recent post list in my blog content?
Yes you can include the list in the content of any page or post by using this shortcode:
[ yd_list_posts ]
The shortcode supports optional parameters to overload all basic plugin settings.
You can for example query posts using any custom WP Query using this syntax:
[ yd_list_posts spec_query='<your query parameters here>' ]
Example:
[ yd_list_posts spec_query='showposts=3' ]
to show the last 3 posts of your blog
How do I display a list of previous posts on my homepage?
Insert this code into your index.php
homepage template, after the loop:
<?php display_yd_previous_posts_here() ?>
How do I specify the number of previous posts to show in the “previous posts” list?
Add the optional ‘number of posts’ parameter when calling the function, for example:
<?php display_yd_previous_posts_here( 5 ) ?> will display the previous 5 posts.
How do i change the text formatting?
Try to load the specially provided CSS stylesheet by checking the “load CSS” checkbox in the plugin settings page. You can either customise this stylesheet which is inside the /css sub-folder of the plugin folder, or add styles to your main stylesheets for elements of the <div>
tag.
What if I want / don’t want to display the date?
Just check or uncheck the “date” checkbox in the widget control pannel. You can customize the date display style by using the usual PHP syntax.
How do I restore the default settings?
Click on the “Reset default settings” button in the YD Recent Posts settings page of the admin menu.
How do I display only posts from a given category?
- If you are using the widget:
Add this custom WP Query code to the “Additional query parameters:” field of the widget admin panel:
cat=<your category id>
if you are using a recent version of WordPress you can even use the category name, like this:
category_name=<your category name>
- If you are using the template function:
Custom WP Query parameters can be passed as the third argument to the function, like this:
<?php display_yd_recent_posts_here( '', '', '<your query parameters here>' ) ?>
- If you are using the content shortcode:
Custom WP Query parameters can be passed like this:
[ yd_list_posts spec_query='<your query parameters here>' ]
For any other information about available custom WP query parameters, please check this page of the WP Codex documentation.
How do I get rid of the link at the bottom of every page?
Once you install or upgrade the plugin, a link reading “Featuring Recent Posts WordPress Widget development by YD” will appear at the bottom of each of your blog’s pages by default. This can of course be deactivated. Just check the “Disable backlink in the blog footer:” checkbox in the plugin settings page. You will get a warning message suggesting a donation.
Why is this link present in the first place?
I give away this useful plugin for free. The only benefits I get from developing and supporting it is from donations (unfortunately, they usually are very scarce), and derived work I get from customers that would be interested in custom developments. By leaving a back-link from your site to my developer’s sites, you eventually support my efforts by offering my free-lance custom development services some visibility on the web. This does not cost you anything, but it might give me access to some business opportunities, and help me earn a living. All the time that I do not spend actively searching for new customers, I can give back to the community by developing new features and hopefully more useful open-source plugins! I call this concept “backlinkware”. If the link bugs you and you still want to support my efforts and encourage me to maintain and improve the piece of free software you are using, please consider making a small donation before deactivating the link!

Can I use this plugin on a network of blogs? So that all recent posts appear automatically on the home page of the network?
Thank you
le 30 August 2010 à 17:46 h
Hi trying out your plugin but no matter what I do I can not stop the thumbnails using a inline style “”
I removed inline from the plugin interface and set the size to 80 x 80 and even changed a setting in yd-recent-posts-widget.php
to be
/** Init values **/
$yd_rp_plugin_version = “3.0.1”;
$plugin_dir = ‘yd-recent-posts-widget’;
$default_image_width = 80;
$default_image_height = 80;
$default_cutlength = 128;
$default_image_style = ‘padding-right:5px;padding-bottom:10px;float:left;’;
Still no joy ..how do i format the display in the side bar as i would like it to look the same as the post above in featured.

hey could you tell me how i can get a “title” above the listing of YD recent posts? I want to have the word: NEWEST UPDATES to appear above them. Thx!
le 7 September 2010 à 1:04 h
same here: I’m really not liking that the plugin inserts its own title that is non-customizable. It’s not even wrapped in an tag/element!? Mind explainin ght logic behind this? Am I missing something?
le 8 September 2010 à 2:11 h
@pdxgeek:
I think you are using the wrong widget. Please use “YD Recent Posts” and not the (somewhat obsolete and buggy) “YD Previous Posts”.
le 8 September 2010 à 2:47 h
I am using ‘YD Recent Posts with thumbnails’…
How do I customize the block title? Can’t see where it’s being inserted from the plugin files. Definitely needs the ability to change the heading from ‘YD Recent Posts’ to the user’s choosing… in my case, ‘Recent News’.
le 8 September 2010 à 3:48 h
I am testing out a website right now and have two questions. The first is if there is a way to show the recent posts on the home page as two columns. The second is how to make padding around the image box so that the title and excerpt are not so close. I’m sure I am missing something simple on both of these, but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks so much, Mindy

Hello
I am trying to get the lists to appear below some on content on my page but it keeps appearing as the first item of the page.
please advise?
mike
le 8 September 2010 à 22:30 h
Update: I figured out that I was missing my wp head code so that is why the page was not reading my css changes (the padding that i wanted around the image box). So that is fixed now. I still would be interested to know how to make two columns. Thanks for a lovely plugin!
le 22 September 2010 à 17:33 h

thanks in advance

Hi there,
This plugin looks awesome but I cant for the life of me get it to show in a widget area. It seems to install fine and I can add it to the sidebar and set it up but it just doesn’t display at all.
I am using WP 3.0.1 and BP 1.2.5.2
Any help would be appreciated!
Ross 🙂
le 7 October 2010 à 22:56 h
Your WP plugin is very good! Congratulations. But it isn’t work well with “All in One Video Pack”, when I put a video in a new post. Test it, please.
Thanks.
Leonardo.

Hello….I am trying to have a list of past events on my homepage only. (reason of past is because I haven’t added any new ones as of yet) I am a newbie to the php code and I seen that I am to put the code at the end of my loop on the index page. This is my code for the index page could you please advise where I am to put the code? I can supply a login if someone can assist me…thanks
<?php
get_header();
if (have_posts())
{
while (have_posts())
{
art_post();
}
art_page_navi();
} else {

}

Hi There I love your widget the only thing is i want it to only show on the front page… how do i di this?
le 4 November 2010 à 6:24 h
same Q as Mike — how do i get the recent posts to appear last under a header with title of my choosing and not first on the homepage when using the short code. just want the recent posts on that first home page without going through alot of gymnastics in php.
other than that, it looks lovely! thank you!
le 7 November 2010 à 19:33 h
Is there a way to exclude a category from displaying?
le 8 November 2010 à 17:32 h
@Darren:
use WP custom query syntax: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/query_posts#Category_Parameters
like for example: “cat=-3” to exclude posts from category #3
le 11 November 2010 à 15:39 h
YD,
thank you for this useaful plugin. I wanted to show how thankfull I am, and pay a donation, but there is no Serbia in country list. So please consider this, and give me feedback on my mail.
Sanja from Belgrade (Serbia)
le 12 November 2010 à 13:36 h
@Sanja:
Thank you for considering a donation. You’re right, there is still no PayPal in Serbia, but it seems it will come out soon: http://www.tradingmarkets.com/news/stock-alert/pypl_-paypal-to-debut-in-serbia-by-year-end–879756.html
In the meantime, I have no other simple way to accept donations. If you want to show up your consideration for my work, you can always put up a link on your site or write an article about my plugins. Thanks again.
le 12 November 2010 à 14:10 h
Hi, love your widget so much, theres just one thing thats been buggin me and probably really easy to sort out.
I want it so the posts in the widget show up in date order with the newest post first. as opposed to new posts being at the bottom of the feed.
any help is much appriciated!
you can find the example on here: nowsplit.com
Thanks
le 12 November 2010 à 14:25 h
@Richard:
I don’t get it. What you are describing is already the default behavior of the widget; most recent posts come first.
le 12 November 2010 à 14:27 h
oh? if you have a look on http://www.nowsplit.com you will see the news is coming up as oldest post first. do you have any idea why this is?
le 12 November 2010 à 14:52 h
Hi Yann, 🙂
My blog is about astrology, but I will write (soon) about my new design and I will be glad to mention you there. I put your credits below Recent Posts list on my site, and I suggest all the people who comment here and asking for more and more to do that. Moving from footer doesn’t mean that it is forbbiden to put it in sidebar. 🙂
My donation will be simbolycal, but I really understand how hard is working only for enthusiasm, especially when we can not live based on it. So, I’ll wait for paypall, till than wish you all the best.
sanja
le 12 November 2010 à 15:56 h
@Richard:
Yes I can see it. If you don’t use a custom query, my plugin just lists the posts in the same order as your global blog settings. By default, WordPress lists latest posts first. If you change that in WordPress (or if another plugin does), then it will change in the widget also. You can probably customize the query in the widget with the custom query setting. Try this in the “additional query parameters” field of the widget option panel: “orderby=date&order=desc”. More info here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/query_posts#Orderby_Parameters
le 12 November 2010 à 16:17 h
thank you so much! i couldnt for the life of me figure out where it was all going so wrong. And once again the plug in is amazing, thank you so much!
le 12 November 2010 à 16:39 h
arghh, none of it are working and i turned off any other query plugins too incase they were interferring with it, looks like they’re not. Its strange as the blog feed has it with most recent posts first
le 12 November 2010 à 16:57 h
@Richard:
I just don’t get it. The customized query should work (just tested it on this very site). Other things to check: did you use “sticky posts”, is there a discrepancy between the different date fields in the WP database. Anyway, never saw this happen before, and no report from any other user. There must be something specific on your setup, but I can’t tell what. Can’t do more for you right now.
le 12 November 2010 à 17:10 h
ahh yeah, i got all teh posts i want to show up as sticky. they just dont show up at all otherwise
le 12 November 2010 à 17:19 h
@Richard:
Try removing the sticky and unchecking the “Skip latest posts on homepage” setting in the plugin option page instead. By default the plugin does not show the latest posts that are already on the home page of a regular blog. The stickiness messes up default post ordering. Hopefully that’s the trick.
le 12 November 2010 à 17:28 h
aha! figured it all out…. it still didnt seemed to work for me untill i made it show only posts with a certain tag. So just tagged all the posts and is working fine now.
Thank you again for all the help!! very much appriciated
le 12 November 2010 à 17:58 h
how do i unsubscribe to this?
mike
le 12 November 2010 à 20:49 h
@Mike:
I can’t find your e-mail address in the comments subscription list, did you manage to unsubscribe by yourself? (sorry, the subscription interface is in French, it dates back from a time when most of this site’s visitors were French speakers).
le 12 November 2010 à 20:58 h
@Phill:
Why would you want to disable caching? this would increase your database load with an additional WP query for each page display, plus potentially as many queries as displayed posts to find the thumbnails. There’s got to be a better way.
le 12 November 2010 à 21:08 h
Yan
Err actually since you are now responding can you answer my query.
I adore your plugin but cant use it.
Wherever in a post I insert the code, the content goes straight to the top of the page – which is a pain in the derriere!
I want the rendered content to appear where I plac it?
How do I stop this?
Merci
mike
le 16 November 2010 à 3:50 h
Hello Yann i recently discovered your plugin and I’m testing it on a new layout and theme on my blog. I want to ask you a few things since I’m a total disaster at php and css and coding in general.
First, is it possible to make an array of thumbnails? like have certain rows and columns to go with them? I want to put 2 thumbnails on a line with care not to break the width of the sidebar.
And second, is there any way to display certain pages or categories or even tags instead of recent posts? I’m interested in having maybe another widget instance to show more thumbnails for all the pics from a certain page. I’m looking through the php file and nothing that might be changed comes up to me.
Thanks and hope you will add more customizable feature to make this plugin THE thumbnail widget plugin for wordpress 🙂
le 19 November 2010 à 7:33 h
I try to use this code on one of my pages: [yd_list_posts spec_query=’cat=15&showposts=2′] and it’s not working. I believe it is because of the ampersand and the way wordpress shows it?
le 27 November 2010 à 21:50 h
Can you please answer the questions about changing the Title when the plugin is used in a template? A few people asked this question but it was never answered.
le 9 December 2010 à 18:47 h
@Jason:
Right now there is no easy way to do this due to a bug in the present version of the plugin. This will be fixed in the next release (soon).
le 15 December 2010 à 7:29 h
Hi,
I’m sure the answer to this is obvious, but I can’t find it anywhere. Love the plugin, have it in a sidebar widget on the home page, posts are showing up with excerpts, but when you click on the title or More… the link does not go to the post, it stays on the page. Mouse over reveals the link is the home page. I do have a news page that shows the posts. Help?
le 16 December 2010 à 19:26 h
Bonjour,
Merci d’avance

Great plugin!!
But could you please help to figure out why does it use a 100% of height of my sidebar?? it stretches till the end of a sidebar.
no matter what i do. placing widget in a table with a fixed height doesn’t help too!
the only way it looks good is in the footer.. but i want it in sidebar. Please, help!
i use [yd_list_posts] in sidebar text area.
you can see the problem here – http://ogoblog.net/
le 23 December 2010 à 18:05 h
Hello! Love the plug-in. I am trying to make two simple (I think!) modifications:
– I want a br between the Date and the Title. Just want them on separate lines.
– I want to take out the “Continue” at the end. I already have a style (“read more”) and was going to enter that in the Ellipsis string.
You can see it here (middle bottom, “From the Blog”.)

Thanks!

I would like to put a border line between the posts, how can I do this?
le 31 December 2010 à 3:31 h
Hi there
Really love your plug-in – works a treat and looks great.
I was wondering if there is an easy way to include Private Posts?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Sean
le 31 December 2010 à 10:01 h
One more question… whether I check or uncheck the box for skipping the latest post on the homepage, it does not work when I am using it in the actual php page (rather than sidebar). What I’m doing is putting it in the sidebar so that I can control the settings, but not displaying it on that particular page in the sidebar (using the Dynamic Widgets plugin).
If that is the problem, is there a workaround I could try? I would really like to have my latest 2 – 3 posts displayed with this plugin beneath my current post, on my homepage. But right now it is duplicating the current post, which looks a bit strange.
le 5 January 2011 à 4:54 h
Hi!
Thanks for this plugin! I have 1 question. I’m trying to limit the number of recent posts. In FAQs, you mentioned to add when calling the function.
Where exactly do I place this?
thanks!
Best,

Hi,
I have a specific question. I am wondering if there is an Option to only list posts of same category as current page. So that the posts relate entirely to the page they are showing up on.

Thanks for the plugin!!!

Where can I adjust how elements are placed in the widget? Basically where can I view the tags and such for the widget layout? I want the title on the left of the photo, and the excerpt below and not flowing around the image. Thanks for working on creating a great plugin!

Hello,
i tried to use plugin, and have one question. If in post is no image, plugin use default. I tried to change default image in setting page but no effect. Default image remain. Is it possible to change icon or it is only one choice to use default?
thanks
le 26 February 2011 à 2:16 h
Hi Yann,
Thanks for the plugin. I recently added it to my WordPress and I’m a big fan! In exchange, I’d like to translate this plugin for you in Polish. I look forward to hearing from you.
le 28 February 2011 à 21:25 h
Great plugin and I really want to utilize it properly. My background it a pattern and makes it difficult to read the Recent Posts Widget. Can you teach us how to change the background of the widget to white? Thanks!!
le 1 March 2011 à 10:38 h
@TotBlog
Just change the background property in the css.
le 5 March 2011 à 1:27 h
I love your plugin. I love it so much, that I want to use it many times on my site. But, it doesn’t seem to come with multiple instances. Any guidance?
le 31 March 2011 à 23:37 h
You really ought to be more careful with instructions. I have wasted 5 hours discovering that the example
[ yd_list_posts spec_query=’showposts=3′ ]
doesn’t work. It will only work if the space between the first bracket and the letter y is removed.
[yd_list_posts spec_query=’showposts=3′ ]
I still haven’t been able to get the “and” command to work using and ampersand & sign.
The plugin is great. It needs good, clear, correct, complete, documentation. A list of shortcodes surely could not take more than a minute to type could it?
le 1 April 2011 à 17:46 h
@Happeh: if you want to take time to provide better documentation, I’ll be happy to publish it. I don’t have moe free time to dedicate to it myself.
All WP shortcodes use the same syntax (no space at the beginning.) However, since I’m using the plugin myself, if I put it that way into the page I will display the result instead of the shortcode itself.
le 2 April 2011 à 4:14 h
I love your plugin, but how do I only display the image? Just like on the sidebar of this site: http://www.leblogdebetty.com/en/2011/03/30/booom/
Thanks.
le 2 April 2011 à 5:10 h
I got it already. I have another question. How do I get rid off the “YD Recent Posts” text on top of the recent posts?
le 4 April 2011 à 16:59 h
Hi!
I’ve installed and customized your plugin, works super smooth. The only problem is that it seems to crash my “Edit Post” page, making the Visual view not open, and the timestamp not work.
Any thoughts on what may be the problem?
I use WP 3.1.
Thanks!!
le 4 April 2011 à 17:01 h
Cool plugin guys. Just one question,
How do I get rid of this statement that appears just above my posts?
YD Recent Posts
From the top of the latest post? Is in a php file? I can’t find it anywhere. Since it doesn’t have a class or id I can’t do a display:none. How do I get rid of it or replace it?
Thanks,
Dan
le 5 April 2011 à 1:02 h
@Dan: if you’re using the widget, just change the widget title in the widget admin panel. If you’re using a template tag or shortcode, you can pass the title as a parameter. And of course there are CSS classes so it’s easy to make any part of the display disappear (please check how to access css elements by hierarchy).
le 6 April 2011 à 12:14 h
1. How do I only display the thumbnails?
2. How do I limit the recent posts into 3?
3. How do I change the width and height? I tried changing it in the admin, but it did not work.
le 7 April 2011 à 11:16 h
@James :
1 – use another of my plugins (YD Recent images)
2 & 3 are already largely covered in previous comments
le 13 April 2011 à 8:29 h
Hello, thank you for an amazing plugin! I have just a quick question for you, how would I go about removing the dotted line that is generated at the very bottom of the widget?
Thank you once again for your work.
le 4 May 2011 à 23:02 h
Hi there – has anyone managed to get this working with wordpress multiuser? It doesn’t work for me, and I only have two sites on my MU install.
le 6 May 2011 à 9:44 h
@Sandy: yes, it works with WordPress multiuser/multisite/networked (this site is multi user).
le 21 May 2011 à 8:53 h
hi, i was wondering if it is possible to add a navigation link below, thanks
le 24 May 2011 à 0:25 h
Hi, is there a way to determine the number of post displayed in the widget itself, instead of inserting php code on the index page?
Thanks.
le 24 May 2011 à 0:39 h
@Eli: You certainly don’t have to insert php code anywhere, please read the widget documentation.
le 28 June 2011 à 0:43 h
Hi YD Dubois,
Merci pour ton plugin. I have looked through the forum and instructions, but I can’t find anything on inserting your plugin into the page. When I paste this code
[ yd_list_posts ]
It displays the recent posts by taking up the whole content area. Is there any way to set it to a specific size.
You have said,
“The shortcode supports optional parameters to overload all basic plugin settings.”
Do these parameters refer to the layout size? How would I go about changing the parameters. A div css code?
I am sorry but I am really new to this. I am really trying to learn though. So if you could send me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.
Merci en avance,
Leif

i had you modify one of your plugins almost a year ago (the sitewide settings plugin) and donated money towards the project. you had mentioned that you would include my url in the list of donors – and i just notice that somehow the wrong url was placed! i think the url you placed was bbgqt.org but it needs to be bossinternetmarketing.com – can you change it please?
Thanks!

I found a bug in your plugin in the widget_yd_rp function that prevents the shortcode from displaying content in the correct order. I’m pretty sure it has to do with the code that checks the $echo variable and returns or echos the $html variable. I think it is broken and the conditional is not working right. Its at about line 320 of yd-rpw-widget.inc.php. The way I found to fix it is to eliminate the “echo” functionality all together and change the entire conditional statement to return $html; I hope this helps in the next version of your plugin.

Hello,
I would like to display only 4 posts from a specific category. How would I write that?
le 14 July 2011 à 4:50 h
Hi Yann,
I saw the faq answer above for excluding a category:
“use WP custom query syntax: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/query_posts#Category_Parameters
like for example: “cat=-3″ to exclude posts from category #3″
This didn’t work for me. I am using YRP as a widget and assumed that I should put “cat=-11″ in the “Additional query parameters” field. Am I wrong? Should I have included more of the query like “query_posts( ‘cat=-11’ );” in that text field? Please advise and thank you for the wonderful plugin!

but i want to change the lenght of the excertp, because it seems a little bit “ugly” the blank space in each excertp. Is it possible change this?
Regards and thanks a lot.

rather than

Thanks!

I only get little boxes with question marks – rather than thumbnails – when I activate your widget. Please advise.
(I’d gladly display your link and make a donation if I could get it to work!)

Dear,
Thnx for the plugin, so far it looks good. I just have one major problem. There is a black space between the plugin header and the first post showing up in the widget. When I leave out all posts, that space is still there. How can I get rid of it?
le 12 August 2011 à 18:36 h
I managed to get my post from the bottom of the blank space to the top, by editting h4 to h3 in the style sheet. The blank space is now only below the post and it gets bigger the more posts I make.. Any ideas?

Hi,
One of the best widgets I’ve seen so far, answers the needs of most of us in my opinion.
The widget works fine in the sidebar provided by my theme.
I created a sidebar widget on the homepage where I inserted YD recents posts widget. The title displays fine, but nothing else shows up.
So i tried to use the PHP code you offered in your FAQ and I have the exact same problem.
I’ve seen similar cases in the previous posts here, and haven’t seen an answer. If you have the slightest idea why it wouldn’t work :
-can other widgets might interfere?
-would the CSS have something to do with it?
Would you have any helpful advice?
Thank you.

A wonderful plugin, but one issue. Installed properly and had it working in the sidebar but had to take it down temporarily. The issue is updating. When I do it and check “Update Plugin Settings”, it goes directly to a “404 Not Found” page on my site. There must be a setting for this and I truly hope you can assist. Thank you.

I am trying to get the lists to appear below some on content on my page but it keeps appearing as the first item of the page. Saw the same Q in this comments but not answered. please reply
le 3 October 2011 à 17:50 h
@matt: yes, this is a known bug. The code needs to be patched to correct it. The correction has been given somewhere else on this page or on the plugin page. The correction will be included in the next release of the plugin.

Hello – I’ve just installed your plugin on this site : spsolutions.org.uk. I can style it great and everything – just one thing I want to do and I’m sure it’s easy but I can’t figure it out….
Limit the recent posts – in this case to 6. Can you tell me what I need to edit in the code for the widget to do this please? Would be nice if this was part of the admin of the plugin.
But this plugin is great – thanks.

I have the same issue as Ed, trying to update the config but redirected to Not found.
In my case, it just happens in WordPress 3.2.1, I have the same config in a wordpress 3.1.3. and it works great…
Any suggestions?

i have a question, how do i output the recent post without the thumbnails?..thanks
le 29 November 2011 à 23:06 h
Hi! Love the plugin, but as is customary around here, I have an issue.
http://brittonblog.brittondev.com
Is there a way to make it so that all the posts shown stay the same, regardless of what post page you’re on? I notice that when I navigate through the posts from the home page via the “older posts/newer posts” links, the post blocks in the right side bar readjust because the current featured post disappears from the list, BUT it doesn’t do this if I click on one of the sidebar post boxes.
I realize this might sound confusing…

Hi. Thank you for the great plugin.
I have one question. Is this able to place title under (o upper) thumbnail?
so this looks like
[post thumbnail]
[title]
instead of [post thumbnail] [title]
le 8 December 2011 à 16:25 h
@Elena. This is just a CSS styling issue. You can achieve any display layout you like by customizing you CSS stylesheet. The plugin provides distinct HTML classes for all displayed data to facilitate such styling.
le 8 December 2011 à 18:50 h
@Yan. thank you! but I’m newbie in CSS and don’t understand what css file in need to edit.
I try to add this

Good day,
Thank you for this great plugin. it really is a lot better looking than many i have seen.
My question is one that has been mentioned before but without a difinitive answer.
I would like to limit the number of posts displayed in the widget. I see that you need to add the php code, but where exactly is that added?
As a non PHP boffin, I can figure my way around if I am given some guidance. Please I would love to use the plugin If I can only figure out how to limit the number of posts.
Kind regards 🙂
le 13 December 2011 à 5:53 h
@Elena
The css on your theme may be conflicting with the css of the plugin, i.e. when the plugin css mentions h4, your theme or reset css may have styling for h4 also.
I was having the same problem moving things around, and I believe this was the issue.

Hi,
Thanks for producing a great plugin, proving to be most helpful.
I am having difficulties limiting the amount of posts that feature. I only need 4 to show.
I have changed
to
This did not seem to work and shows full list.
I also changed $spec_query = ‘post_type=post&showposts=’
to $spec_query = ‘post_type=post&showposts=4’
This also did not seem to work and shows full list.
I have cleared cache in admin area and on browser and this has no affect. The plugin is being used on the home page and is called upon in the main index file.
If anyone has any ideas or guidance please help. Any help will be highly appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi, thanks for a great plugin.
Would it be possible to change the post list through user interaction?
I would like to display posts from 1 category as default, and if the user selects a button the list will change to the selected category.
E.G the user is presented with the sport category list by default. Above the list are buttons that represent each category such as music, food and so on. When the user selects music, the featured posts list repopulates to display features from the mucis category.
Thanks
le 27 January 2012 à 12:05 h
@Pete: the plugin uses cache to avoid database connections, so no, it cannot interact dynamically.

Recent Posts plugin seems to work for me in 3.31, altho settings do not seem to be retained on deactivation / reactivation. FYI someone else reports the plugin broken in 3.31 on WordPress.org support.
There is reference in the plugin settings to TimThumb. Am I safe to assume any use of TimThumb by the plugin would be of the updated, secure version and that the plugin does not represent a security risk via Tim Thumb? Thx
le 1 February 2012 à 17:09 h
@R.Richard Hobbs: the Timthumb version I use is not affected and never was. It is an older version that did not implement the unnecessary options that put it at risk in later releases. The Timthumb part will be updated in future releases, but the present version is harmless. This has been confirmed by the WordPress plugin support team. (Plugins with compromised Timthumb versions have been removed from the WP plugin repository).
I don’t see any reason why the plugin would not work in WP 3.3.1. It has some known incompatibilities and limitations, and always had, but I don’t think it’s any worse with later releases of WP.
le 1 February 2012 à 17:30 h
A follow up to my previous comment… your plugin does in fact currently contain an insecure version of TimThumb according to http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/timthumb-vulnerability-scanner/.
Just google Tim Thumb security if you more info about the significant security hole that was discovered summer 2011.
If you install the security scanner there is an option to upgrade TimThumb to the most recent, secure version but I do not use the TimThumb option in YDRP and I dont know if you have customized TimThumb for the plugin? …so I dont know if upgrading TimThumb breaks YDRP? Please update your plugin ASAP.
le 1 February 2012 à 17:41 h
I am perfectly aware of the Timthumb vulnerability issue. As a matter of fact, as a WP expert, I had to help some of my clients get rid of it or recover from compromised sites due to that issue. And no, I won’t upgrade my plugin right now because it is totally unnecessary for that issue. The Timthumb version I use does not contain AT ALL the vulnerable code. It is perfectly safe, and this has been confirmed by many independent checks, including the WordPress plugin support team. In my opinion, all recent versions of Timthumb are less secure than the one I use because they all include code to go and fetch content on other servers. The one I use just does not have this feature, so it’s just impossible to tweak it and make it vulnerable. Security scanners are not reliable because they do not check the code itself. I did.
Sometimes, older versions of things are more reliable than newer ones. This is a good illustration of that fact 😉
Once again to make it perfectly clear for everybody: there is no danger in the Timthumb version I use, and there has never been. Suffice it to say that this plugin is used by tens of thousands of WP blog owners. No security issue has ever been reported with my plugin; while most of the WP blogs that carried unsafe, more-recent versions of Timthumb have been successfully attacked in the days following the discovery of the Timthimb flaw (including some of my clients that used vulnerable themes for which I am not responsible).
If you don’t use the Timthumb option anyway, just delete the timthumb.php file: this will calm your security scanner down 😉
le 1 February 2012 à 17:52 h
Hi Yann – Thank you for the informative, authoritative update 🙂 Sorry for any undue concern.
le 1 February 2012 à 18:05 h
@Richard: you’re perfectly right in your concerns: as a user of my code, you deserve transparent security information, and the Timthumb vulnerability was very real. I’ve seen a few sites that have been hacked for real. Please be assured that if I had any doubt I would have upgraded my plugin right away. So don’t feel sorry. It was a good occasion for me to state things clearly for other potential users. Thanks for your involvement.

Hello,
I’d like to add a divider line between each entry. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks
le 18 February 2012 à 12:20 h
@Rick: that’s easy to do with CSS.
le 18 February 2012 à 15:19 h
I’m assuming I need to place this in your Widget’s code? Where would it go?
le 20 February 2012 à 11:09 h
@Rick: not at all. CSS is outside of the PHP code. It’s part of the layout of your site, usually contained in you theme’s style.css file.
le 22 February 2012 à 17:56 h

I am using a shortcode within my widgets to place the recent posts on more than one page. Because i’m using the shortcode [code][yd_list_posts spec_query=’showposts=3′][/code] I have no control of the default “Recent Posts” being added as the title of the widget or just above the posts. How can I remove this I have looked in all the php files but cannot find that string alone?

Hello everybody,
Is there any solution for displaying recent updated posts at the same time of new posts ?
Thank you
le 19 April 2012 à 9:57 h
Hello,
Although this plugin seems promising, it looks like the recent version of WP has totally borked it.
Although the issues I’m experiencing are also noted in these comments and not addressed by the plugin author:
1. When using the php code for a template, how to limit the number of posts. The example give by passing an integer DOES NOT WORK.
2. Also when using the php code, ‘YD Recent Posts’ appears as plain text above the list, with no html or css tags around it.

Great Plugin, does what I need on the home page, but on other pages I would like to show 3 posts from a given category.

Please can you help?

Hi
Thanks for an awesome plugin! Works perfectly and unlike any others I can find. Just one thing, is it possible to have multiple instances of the recent posts. I can get it to show one category, but ideally I need three streams each showing different categories?
Thanks in advance for any help!
