Hey, did you know you could post your blog in a Facebook page and benefit from all of Facebook’s social bells and whistles without even installing a single plugin?

All you need to do is to get a free Facebook Application ID, create a Facebook “Fan page”, configure the Facebook app to grab a page from your blog, smack it onto a custom tab in the Fan page and bingo!

Let’s review in detail how this works step-by-step…

Since WordPress 2.8, a new kind of caching mechanism has been added to WordPress. it is not very well documented yet (I could not find any relevant page in the Codex. Please leave a comment if you find one).

According to this WordPress core development trac discussion, that feature has been introduced so that “non-persistent” or otherwise “short-lived” data that used to be stored in the “options” database table can be distinguished from “real options data” that is meant to be persistent (ie, live forever in the database until it is updated or erased).

Je retranscris ici un petit memento que je me suis fait pour “remonter” rapidement une configuration opérationnelle sous Debian 5 / Apache2 / PHP5 / Mysql pour héberger des sites sur un serveur dédié GNU/Linux type OVH ou Kimsufi. Cette configuration, qui inclut également eAccelerator et des outils de supervision et d’administration de base (Munin, phpsysinfo, mtop, PhpmyAdmin, AWStats) est opérationnelle et suffisamment sécurisée pour une installation standard (à condition de faire régulièrement toutes les mises à jour des packages). En tout cas pour moi c’est bon©®™.

Voici ma recommandation personnelle pour mettre au point un site professionnel efficace avec WordPress 2.8. C’est une sélection d’outils que j’installe systématiquement sur tous les blogs que j’administre ou mets en place, et qui a largement démontré son efficacité notamment pour les points suivants :

• Optimisation du référencement dans les moteurs de recherche (S.E.O.)
• Fidélisation des visiteurs
• Augmentation du nombre de pages vues par visite

I’ve just finished migrating our www.Nogent-Citoyen.com local community site to WordPress 2.8 RC1 and well… I have to say up to now everything looks great!

The site ran flawlessly right away, with its 25 plugins including Wp Super Cache, the YD Recent Posts Widget and some other quite vintage legacy plugins that I can’t do without. I had no special migration task to conduct. I even ran the site for a few hours on a staging URL without upgrading the database structure, and did not notice anything breaking.

Je m’étais réjoui un peu vite le 9 avril dernier, quand le parlement, habilement manipulé par les députés de l’opposition, avait fait en sorte de rejeter la loi Hadopi en première lecture. Ce rejet, bien loin d’être le fruit d’une heureuse et salutaire prise de conscience de nos élites, n’était qu’une manoeuvre politique pour porter un coup au gouvernement. Un subterfuge qui fit long feu, puisque le projet, à nouveau présenté en un temps record, fut adopté haut la main, les députés de la majorité ayant cette fois fait acte de présence pour prendre part au vote.

According to my Google Analytics and Xiti stats, the majority of the visitors of this yann.com site are now English-speakers (or at least probably not fluent in French.) That’s a consequence of my recent activity as a WordPress plugin open-source developer. So I guess I’ll have to start writing some content in what the French call “the language of Shakespeare” to satisfy that worldwide audience – OK, I don’t guarantee I can really write like Shakespeare did, but then again, who would understand anyways?

I thought that a natural subject for my first English-language post, as a way of inaugurating the new bilingual twist of this blog, would be the subject of running a multi-language WordPress!
